The South Burlington Land Trust will hold its Annual Meeting on July 18 at 4:30 pm on the lawn at Wheeler Homestead. Bring a lawn chair! In case of rain, we will move under the shelter by the pizza oven.

The business meeting will include election of board members, presentation of financial statement and a summary of the year’s activities. We shall also present the South Burlington Land Trust Annual Award.
Following the business meeting, Brandon Bless from Bread and Butter Farm will bring us up to date on activities and plans at the Farm, emphasizing their sustainable farming practices. Snacks will be available. Carpooling encouraged.at the Wheeler Park Homestead gardens.

The Champlain Valley Conservation Partnership – OCT, ’19
The Champlain Valley Conservation Partnership recently announced its formation to tackle regional conservation and land stewardship issues. The group is composed of the City of South Burlington, the Town of Williston, the Town of Shelburne, the Town of Hinesburg, and the Town of St. George.
The group kicked things off by holding a community engagement event at the Ewing Parcel, a newly conserved property that straddles the boundaries of the Town of Shelburne and the City of South Burlington. The partnership used the event as an opportunity to engage with residents and discuss the importance of conservation at a landscape scale and across municipal boundaries.
The event was co-hosted by the University of Vermont and The Nature Conservancy (TNC). TNC holds a conservation easement on the property, which is now owned by the University. Green Up Day 2019 – Saturday May 4
Always the first Saturday in May, this year marks 49 years of Vermont’s unique Green Up Day tradition. Volunteers statewide come together in their communities to tackle trash and litter along roadsides, in public spaces, natural landscapes and waterways. Vermont was the first state in the nation to designate one special day for cleaning the entire state. It is a fun and rewarding day for all those who participate. This is the 8th year that the South Burlington Land Trust is organizing and managing the Green Up Day effort in South Burlington, with the active support and participation of City staff.

SBLT Annual Meeting – April 7, 2019
The Annual General Meeting of the South Burlington Land Trust (SBLT) Sunday, April 7, was well attended with close to 30 people present. The annual meeting included a brief presentation by SBLT Board President Sarah Dopp on activities and accomplishments of the organization over the past year and a lively presentation by SBLT Board Member Sophie Mazowita, Coordinator of the South Burlington Master Naturalist Program and Mammal Tracking Project.
Sophie’s extensive knowledge and enthusiasm for her multiyear project studying wildlife in South Burlington was evident during amost informative presentation. She described learnings about the city’s large mammals and wildlife corridors. Her wildlife camera footage of otters, bobcats, coyotes, foxes, bears was enjoyed by all. t More info about core habitat areas, key road crossings, and corridors that can provide functional, connected habitat for our widest-ranging animals is at www.trackingvt.org. Attendees were also invited to include their own sightings through the www.inaturalist.org site.
Jon Binhammer from The Nature Conservancy spoke briefly about conservation surrounding Shelburne Pond, which includes the goal for conserving the 48 acre Ewing property, a portion of which is based in South Burlington.

SBLT Position Statement: Edlund South Tract – November 2017
SBLT has released a summary of challenges associated with proposed development of the Edlund South tract, in response to UVM’s provisional sale of the land to Eastern Development Corporation. SBLT supports maintaining the current zoning and land use of the tract, which encompasses 34 acres of mature forest and wetlands bordering Potash Brook. Read the full position statement here.
City of South Burlington Comprehensive Plan

Please note the normal day and time for the SBLT’s monthly board meetings are the LAST WEDNESDAY of each month at Northfield Savings Bank on Shelburne Road at 4:30 PM. All SBLT members (and interested community members) are welcome to attend!
10th Annual Meeting, March 10, 2013
The 10th Annual Meeting of the SBLT took place March 10. After the potluck meal, the last year’s activities were reviewed. Two 3-year board terms were filled by Karen Ryder and Sarah Dopp. The SBLT Award was presented to Bernie Paquette, a 30-year resident of South Burlington, who is known for his advocacy for picking up litter, recycling and increasing our care for the city. He is shown here with SBLT President, Sarah Dopp.
Green Mountain Environmental Leadership Awards
On April 14, 2011 the Burlington Free Press and ECHO presented their inaugural environmental awards in 3 categories. The SBLT won the award in the “Courage in Leadership” category for our leadership in educating and mobilizing our community on the issue of siting the new police station in the Calkins Natural Area (now called Wheeler Nature Park). The resulting public vote resulted in saving the natural area and finding a desirable Gregory Drive location for the police facility. The award came in the form of a lovely reception at ECHO, lots of wonderful publicity for the SBLT, a beautiful Simon-Pearce engraved vase and a check for $1000 to further the SBLT’s conservation-based mission!
